Hybrid cars show they can go the distance

JERRY EDGERTON | May 28, 2014 | When gas-electric hybrid cars went on sale here near the start of the new century, their public image was of marvelous gas mileage but possible durability problems -- especially with the batteries. Now a study by auto website has found numerous hybrids on the road having already traveled 150,000 miles. The study analyzed all hybrids offered for sale online during calendar 2013 and found that up to 5.4 percent of them had topped the 150,000 mark. The best-known and top-selling hybrid, the Toyota Prius, registered 2.1 percent in the high mileage…
GRANT GERKE | MAY 22, 2014 | I attended the Electric Drive Transportation Association meeting in Indianapolis this week and stunning data was presented at a market trends session on Tuesday about maturing electric vehicles and what will early adopters do with these cars? I posted the main story, "Automakers Take Notice, Data Points to Love Affair with Electric Cars," on Inside EVs and here are some excerpts from it: "From research panel of more than 8,000 EV drivers, Hajjar says, “around 24% of today’s EV drivers expect to part (lease ends, sales) with their vehicle in the next…

Officials from the City of Minneapolis and State Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle will unveil and demonstrate 36 new stations going on line today during a media briefing at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The city and the Minnesota Department…
Charles Cooper | March 29, 2014 | Call it a publicity stunt with a higher purpose -- or at least one that transcends the usual pursuit of narrow self-interest. There's that, too, but when Norman Hajjar completes his 12,000 mile traverse of the continental United States in about three weeks, he hopes to have made a larger point about electric cars and their potential. The journey would set a record as the world's longest-ever car trip powered by 100 percent electricity and offer further testimony as to the promise of this nascent technology. But it's not a challenge most…
Greg Kable | 24 March 2014 | Jointly developed BMW-Toyota two-seater will tap high-tech hybrid expertise from Toyota’s Le Mans programme The first fruit of an alliance between BMW and Toyota will be a two-seat sports car that will bring performance-boosting supercapacitor technology to a series-production model for the first time. Confirmed by BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer and Toyota boss Akio Toyoda late last year, the new sports car will sire a radically different BMW Z4 replacement, previewed here, and a spiritual successor to the Supra, at which Toyota hinted with its FT-1 concept at the Detroit motor show…
