Electric cars gain a toehold in Atlanta

Richard HalicksThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution December 1st, 2014 It's fall, and the Leafs are turning left and right. The handful of plug-in electric car models available here, led by the Nissan Leaf, has come as a bit of a shock to the Atlanta market. They aren't underpowered golf cart-like vehicles, for one thing. The coolest and most expensive plug-in, the Tesla Model S, goes from zero to 60 in, well, it was there before you finished reading this. (For the record: 3.2 seconds.) By the end of 2014, 18,000 to 20,000 all-electric cars will be on the road in Georgia.…
By Maya Albanese November 25, 2014 Electric vehicles are getting a lot more efficient and popular to drive in New York City. Did you know there are more than 150 commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Manhattan, as listed in the online database PlugShare, compared with only 39 gas stations, according to a Wall Street Journal Analysis of New York Department of Finance Records. A decade ago, there were 60 gas stations, but station owners are making more money now by selling their high-value Manhattan real estate than by selling gasoline. Could this signal a new era of…

November 26, 2014 Electric vehicles, which registered nearly zero in statewide new car-sales as recently as three years ago, are now taking a noticeable market share, according to the latest quarterly report released by the Sacramento-based California New Car Dealers Association. CNCDA said 23,648 registrations of various plug-in hybrid models in California from January through September this year accounted for 1.7 percent of all new-vehicle purchases. Registrations of all-electric vehicles, like Nissan's Leaf, accounted for 20,516 new vehicle sales, or 1.5 percent, during that time. The combined total of 44,164 for the first nine months of…
DECEMBER 2, 2014BY NIKKI GORDON-BLOOMFIELD While most studies to date suggest that electric car owners only ever need to charge their car once a day in order to have enough range to carry out their everyday activities, knowing there's local charging infrastructure in your community or at your place of work can make the difference between buying an electric car or not. And while most commuters don't need to charge on the way to and from work, knowing there's a place to charge at work can help facilitate those lunch-time errands, after-work trips and deal with the kind of…
Dec 1, 2014 By John Voelcker   If there was any doubt that we'll see a spate of new plug-in hybrids over the next few years, a set of three different announcements from BMW last week should put that to rest. The Bavarian maker of "ultimate driving machines" launched a long-wheelbase 5-Series sedan for China with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, showed a prototype 3-Series plug-in hybrid sport sedan, and described a new Power eDrive system that produces a remarkable 670 horsepower. It's long been known that BMW will introduce a plug-in hybrid X5 sometime next year. That mid-size SUV…
