CNN — Electric vehicles are finally turning a profit for Stellantis, CEO Carlos Tavares said Thursday, and, in contrast to some rivals, it will not cut back on producing EVs.

The announcement marks an important milestone for electric vehicles and for traditional automakers, which have struggled to make money on EVs even as demand has grown.

At least now we know what it's called—and who's running it. That aside, details remain thin on the new EV charging network called Ionna, other than the claim it will have 30,000 stations up and running by 2030, with the first ones to open this year. The company announced Friday its CEO would be Seth Cutler, previously president and COO of EVconnect, and a chief infrastructure engineer at Electrify America before that.

A comparison of monthly EV sales data for the last three calendar years shows that for each individual month, EV sales increased significantly from the year before. The highest sales for a single month in 2021 was about 50,000 vehicles, for 2022 was about 80,000 vehicles, and in 2023 was over 100,000. Sales are often lowest in January following a rise that usually takes place in December.
